| Barry Blaze Review at Jesus Freak Hideout
( 05/21/2008) |
| |
Christian music fans of the 1990's will probably remember a CCM staple electronic pop group called Code of Ethics. From their hit single "Something Real" to the career highlight album Arms Around The World, Code of Ethics had made an impression on Christian music listeners, so naturally, as an avid CCM listener in the 90's myself, you can imagine this reviewer would be especially interested in the news of COE's frontman Barry Blaze resurfacing in 2007 with his first solo project.
Upon COE's demise (or more appropriately, hibernation), Blaze found himself helping start a music ministry at Chets Creek Church in Jacksonville FL in 2001, which pulled the singer/songwriter off the road for awhile. However, a serious motorcycle accident in 2004 changed his life and direction drastically. He soon found himself undergoing a series of operations to restore lost portions of his eyesight and hearing, only for him to still have to sustain significant permanent damage to this day. Out of the immense trial that this brought on for Blaze, his debut release Patiently Waiting was born.
As a departure from his usual electronic synth pop ways, Blaze presents Patiently Waiting in a very contemporary pop/rock worship fashion. While the industry is bombarded with worship project after worship project almost weekly, Blaze manages to inject plenty of life and passion into Patiently Waiting to make it stand out from the rest. Most noticeably may be Barry's strong vocal stylings and the quality self-production. Blaze also performs all the instruments on the record himself, save for the drums and percussion (the former is mostly performed by none other than Code alumnus Rick Brainer). There are moments on Patiently Waiting that may feel a tad dated or even lean a bit too much towards the pop side for its own good, but it's tracks like "Living In Me," where Blaze successfully layers his vocals for some great harmony, or the catchy title track, which is a much more personal and stripped down acoustic offering, where the album really starts to shine. It's actually in these more intimate moments where Blaze finds his strength, showcasing his vocal capabilities as well. The Patiently Waiting record packaging also comes with a letter inside from Barry telling of the accident and what inspired this project which helps add to the experience of this record.
Among the aforementioned highlights include "You Are," "Unsatisfied," "I Will Sing," and "Oh Lord." The only song that feels a bit misplaced is the quirky "Dear John," which is an upbeat-pop look at the rapture from the eyes of someone left behind. While a couple songs may go a bit over the top, like "One Desire" for example, Blaze balances it out quickly by dropping a much more grounded highlight like "I Will Sing" or its follow-up, "Oh Lord" (which, incidentally, both bear characteristics that could almost pass them off as Code of Ethics ballads). To close the project, Blaze offers up a worthy cover of the classic "I Surrender All" with a hint of COE also mixed in, but never strays from the vibe of Patiently Waiting.
Although Barry Blaze's first solo project is far from perfect, there's plenty for worship fans and even listeners of Blaze's previous work, to enjoy. Patiently Waiting also doubles as a nice appetizer as we await the release of an all-new Code Of Ethics album this summer, but even after the return of Barry's flagship venture, here's to hoping he will continue to pursue the worship genre through his solo projects because there's enough promise displayed within this record's eleven tracks to warrant anticipation for more.

| Ronnie Freeman's God Speaking Bows Today
( 01/08/2008) |
| |
God Speaking, the highly anticipated sophomore solo recording from singer/songwriter Ronnie Freeman, bows today on White Apron Entertainment/KOCH Records. The project will simultaneously release in Canada, Australia and New Zealand via Go Global Entertainment.
God Speaking includes the hit title track, which was #8 on CRW's Year End 2007 Top 100 Inspirational chart. The song remained in the Top 5 on national Inspirational radio charts for multiple weeks last year.
Comprised of 11 selections written or co-written by Freeman, God Speaking was produced by Nathan Nockels (Passion, Chris Tomlin, Watermark), with the exception of the title cut, which was produced by Mark Hammond (Nichole Nordeman, Josh Groban). The project also features a special appearance by Christy Nockels (formerly of Watermark) on the Freeman-penned "My Inheritance," which has been released to Christian AC and Inspirational radio.
Christian Retailing calls God Speaking "...a solid collection of piano-driven pop-rock songs that even have an R&B influence. ...His voice is strong, sounding at times soulful, like R&B crooner Robin Thicke, and at other times gritty like Marc Cohn..."
A highly sought-after songwriter, Freeman's songs have been recorded by Avalon, Mandisa, Michael English and Daniel Kirkley, among others. He currently serves as an artist-in-residence at Nashville's Fellowship Bible Church and is actively involved with JH Ranch in northern California, a camp that ministers to youth, families and singles each summer. Freeman began leading worship at JH Ranch in 1999.
In addition, his renditions of "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" and "Nothing But The Blood of Jesus" are featured on the Grammy Award-nominated Sparrow recording, I'll Fly Away: Country Hymns & Songs of Faith. The project also includes contributions from Vince Gill, Dolly Parton and Marty Stuart, among others, and is nominated in the "Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album" category. |

| Jeni Varnadeau Featured on Growthtrac.com

Jeni Varnadeau
By Joe Montague
Jeni Varnadeau may only be five foot tall but her music packs a lot of punch and she says others most often use the word "energetic" to describe her. Laughter punctuates her conversation at almost every turn and she is fiercely proud of her husband Rory.
The thirty-four year old Texan pop star has in recent years become at least as popular in Europe if not more so than she is in the United States. A major contributing reason for that is she and Rory have worked tirelessly at teen camps in Finland and France as well as touring other European venues. As you read this piece Varnadeau has only been back in the US for a few weeks and the couple is preparing for a two month tour of Europe during October and November.
In fact Brussels Belgium and Paris France served as the stage for her 2002 video Go Tell The World. As part of a sponsored mission initiative the singer shot another video in Egypt.
Jeni Varnadeau takes seriously her call to be a role model to teenage girls and that was fostered from the time she was seven years old. At that time she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. She was led to the Lord by her older sister Lisa who was twelve years old at the time.
Her voice growing quieter she talks about her childhood transformation, "I saw that there were adults and teenagers who were Christians and I knew that this was a lifetime thing. This wasn't just I don't want to go to hell. My sister shared with me point blank in a loving one on one way. This was someone talking to me and only to me. She shared with me the difference between knowing about God and knowing him personally. She explained that Jesus would come and live in my heart. I remember looking down at my heart and wondering how He would fit in there."
Varnadeau says that her sister described to her how the Holy Spirit would come and live in her life and how that seemed to make sense to her even at the age of seven. "I could see that Jesus made a difference in lives today and wasn't just a historical figure that I heard about in Sunday school," says Varnadeau.
Varnadeau says that even at the age she noticed a difference in her older sister's life and that made the decision to accept Christ that much easier. "She told me that I could be clean inside. It wasn't like at the age of seven I had done these big sins but it was like ya' I want to be clean inside," she says.
Lisa's influence on Jeni didn't stop with leading her to Christ. "Later when my sister was having a quiet time I remember her sharing the importance of spending time with God every day," says Varnadeau.
Sadly the young life of Lisa ended in 2001 when she passed away after contracting a virus while serving with the Baptist church in North Africa. As young as Lisa Olson was she left her mark on the world in many ways including helping to shape the life of her younger sister. Jeni Varnadeau has truly become one of the most remarkable missionaries to teenage girls today on the international scene.
There is no doubt in my mind that when you listen to Jeni Varnadeau sing "Cutting Strings" and "I'm Waiting" both from her new CD Something Changed that this woman has the ability to rock general market radio. She has not like many Christian artists merely decided to mimic mainstream artists and apply Christian lyrics but instead has become a talented innovator. That innovation can be heard in songs such as "Just Like You" which bears a distinct Parisian sound.
The singer promises to take her young disciples "on a ride to somewhere else/I'm waiting/We can leave behind our trouble and be ourselves/" ("I'm Waiting") and that somewhere else is a life completely given and centered in Jesus Christ.
"If you are not really careful you can become really complacent in your faith. I don't want to be complacent in my faith. I want to be stretched and grow," Varnadeau says.
"I find here in the States (and your scribe would add Canada) that we have our little Christian culture. We have Christian schools, Christian music, Christian magazines and Christian tee shirts. We have this whole little Christian culture. It is great because we have a great support system and a bunch of tools to help us grow in our faith," she says.
Varnadeau warns however, "It's great but if people aren't careful they get too much into that and are no longer sharing their faith. They are secluding themselves from everybody else. If you are speaking that language to a non Christian you are probably going to exclude them, maybe turn them away or cause more confusion for them. (The result is) we are not reaching out to them, coming from where they are or speaking their language."
In January of 2000 the desire to speak the language of teenage girls gave birth to ChikChat a power packed workshop for teenage girls that lasts up to six hours. "Instead of Jeni coming in as a singer, Jeni comes in as a speaker/teacher," she says speaking of herself in the third person.
"I teach about skin care, makeup, dating, sexual purity, how to pray and hold a Bible study. We also talk about self esteem. We have breakout groups and different activities. It's not necessarily me speaking the whole time. (For instance) when we talk about skin care I show a video," she says.
If all of the above activities aren't enough to pack into an abbreviated day the certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor also leads the girls in a kick boxing workout.
"My goal is to encourage girls with their self esteem because if they value who they are as a person they are a lot less likely (to become) pregnant at twelve years old, get into drugs, alcohol or other destructive behaviors. Usually people who don't get into that stuff have a decent self esteem. When you feel good about yourself you are not running to those things to fill you because you are already satisfied. I think that the only way you can be satisfied with who you are is to be satisfied in Christ. I approach things from a Biblical perspective but with tangible things that girls can relate to," says Varnadeau.
The seeds for ChikChat were in part sown when Varnadeau was in junior high school. A special speaker at the church her family was attending challenged the kids to think of their school as a mission field. "That really stuck with me. I started focusing on that and started making my school my mission field," she says.
Varnadeau allows, "Those were the times as I look back that my faith was going the strongest. I was actively sharing my faith and I had a mission field surrounding me. I am so thankful that God had that speaker say that to me. It really sunk in. I really tried to do that in my school. I saw God at work and saw Him challenging me in really neat ways. I felt closer to Him and I saw Him working in the lives of the people around me. It was a really cool period of time."
Junior high and high school became the period in her life that defined Varnadeau. "That period of time in junior high and high school is one of the reasons that ChikChat is important to me. It is why teenage girls are important to me. That is when God really gripped my heart," she says.
I was somewhat surprised that the bubbly redhead underestimates the impact she has on those around her. It is a genuine modesty not merely the deflection of accolades. She does however tell me that her desire to be a role model to young women "is constantly the driving force behind everything."
Our conversation eventually gets around to the song "Miss You" a reminder of both happy memories and also a very dark period in Varnadeau's life. When her sister Lisa passed away, like most who have suffered through such a personal loss it shattered much of Varnadeau's world. "When my sister passed away there was nothing that I could do. I couldn't fix it, couldn't change it, and I couldn't bring her back. I asked God to but He didn't. She was completely gone. I was helpless. There was nothing that I could do in that situation. With everything else you can fix it," she says.
Vanadeau says, "After my sister passed away I didn't want to write a whole lot. I didn't really want to be one of these people who turned out bitter. I tried to write songs but they were all morbid. It really took me two years before I came to the place where I felt I could write something about it. Really you just feel eight million emotions when that happens. I think it takes that long to sort through things and finally land on something.
The passing of Lisa Olson has also found its way into her younger sister's ministry. The experience has given the teenage role model another aspect of her life to share with her young disciples. She says, "When I share the story at ChikChat some girls are really affected because their family is their life. I really did love and appreciate my sister but would I have done more if I knew I would lose her? It is a reminder that we have to make the most of the relationships that we have in the time that we have. I think it is a good eye opener to some girls who are too caught up in, 'Do I have a boyfriend?" she says.
What seems to make Jeni Varnadeau unique is her ability to cross over from teen ministry to adult ministry. In addition to the missions film she was involved in shooting she was commissioned to write the theme song for a Baptist convention which had more than 12,000 attendees. It would be difficult to not like this vibrant young singer. She is the kind of young woman you would want to mentor your daughter. At the same time in her own words she is "goofy" which only adds to the charm.
When Varnadeau burst onto the music scene in 1996 with her debut album Colors Of Truth she rocked the Christian record charts with three singles in the top ten. Her edgy alternative approach to music was at the time fresh and new to the Christian radio format. Her music sent strong signals this was a very special singer/songwriter.
Ten years later Varnadeau has authored a book and Bible study materials for teenage girls. Something Changed is her fifth album and she has established on the international scene as role model, favored pop singer and teacher. Today she is on the eve of her tenth wedding anniversary (October) to husband Rory and she would tell you it is a team effort with Christ at the center.
"God has given me a lot of grace to have a great life," she says.

Lucas Parry
By Joe Montague
It's not often ladies that you get a chance to supervise your husband's actions long before you are even dating him, but that is exactly what happened to Jody and Lucas Parry. Parry an acoustic guitarist, singer/songwriter from the Land Down Under, is yet another Aussie treasure. In what was a very enjoyable conversation with a great guy, Parry told me, "I met her (my wife) on my second trip (to India). It was funny. The bus pulled in and there was this white girl waiting for us. I remember saying to my mate, 'Who is this gorgeous white chick in the middle of India?' It ended up being Jody. She ran the project that we were part of. We really hit it off as friends. We remained friends for two years before I got up the courage to think it would be something more." Laughing and with that ever present Australian charm Parry says, "She was my boss. I fell in love with my boss."
The couple faced some obstacles that only a decade ago would have appeared insurmountable, but in today's world is not that unusual. Jody lived in the US (NJ) while Parry was still toiling in Australia. However even though geographical challenges were overcome there was the matter of (ahem, clearing of the throat sound) just a wee bit of a cultural difference.
Parry relates one of the major differences as being Aussies tend to be more blunt and straight up with what they have to say. "Sometimes that would get me in trouble. For instance we might be socializing with a group of friends and an individual might ask me, 'Do you like my new dress?' I would say, 'No I don't think it looks good,' he says laughing as he now realizes the faux pas. We would go home and laugh about it but Jodie would say, "You probably shouldn't do that. You should probably be softer in your (approach). Now I feel like I have adjusted a lot more to the culture."
When you listen to the glorious worship song "Amazed" from Parry's CD Made To Fly you are not just listening to someone who just sat down to write a praise song. You are listening to a man who has come through difficult days and emerged on the other side as a humble and grateful servant. He relates how Jody and he became engaged and he applied for his fianc |

| Lucas Parry Lands in Australia
( 02/28/2006) |
| |
An excerpt from Lucas Parry's daily blog...
http://lucasparry.blogspot.com/
Rainy, Newcastle, the Flu.
Last night we drove through an amazing storm to Toukley, on the Central Coast. My Nan lives there so we (Mum, Dad and I) visited for the night before we drove in the morning to Newcastle to visit my tour sponsors, Compassion Australia.
Had a great time at Compassion HQ. Finally got to meet the great team over there who work so hard behind the scenes to help eliminate poverty. I had a briefing session and learned the ropes to enable me to head out as a Compassion Advocate. I'm really excited to be able to partner with them on this tour, I pray that heaps of kids will get sponsored over the next 6-weeks.
When I landed in Sydney I had a niggling sniffle..... Now its turned into the full blown flu. Please pray for me as the tour begins in 3 days and I need to kick this sickness. I'm pretty well stuffed up in the sinus and sneezing like a mad man. I'm dosed up on Vitamins and drinking plenty of water. But, I believe in a God who heals and who has ultimate power over sickness, so please agree with me for a total healing so that when I sing my first note in 3 days, I'll be 100% well. AMEN!
Till tomorrow....... |

| Great Reviews For Mr. Nicky
( 11/29/2005) |
| |
Mr. Nicky reviews on Amazon.com...
Super fun music with a message!!!, November 18, 2005
Reviewer: A. J. Discher "Mom of twins"
We adore Rattle Snakes for Breakfast, by Mr. Nicky! My twin five-year old daughters know each song almost word for word. His messages in such songs like Nerds and Weirdo's has made them conscience of others around them and how we all somehow fit and work in this world. The song Bullies brings front and center that being kind and good to others not only is decent but it eliminates the creation of a Bully. Even though a lesson can be learned from most of the songs, they are still entertaining. We sing them in the car even if we left the CD in the player at home. I love the fact that this is music that opens the lines of communication between Parent and Child.
I laugh, and feel such joy when I hear my Children's laughter from their sheer enjoyment. Mr. Nicky brought fun and learning back into music. Imagine getting that for just a small amount. Compared to all the other high priced games and toys for Christmas this year, this CD Far out weighs them in value; it will be the least expensive, yet smartest gift you can give!
Fabulous Children's CD, November 18, 2005 Chicago Dad
Mr. Nicky is an extremely talented musician and singer. One of his songs, "Too Many Beans" has spent some time on XMKids's top 13 list at #1 after moving up the charts over the course of several weeks. Lots of people like a good fart song, but the fact that this song, while great, is the most popular should not detract from the rest of the CD. It's truly wonderful. The songs are clever, funny, and often quite sweet. XMKids plays three other songs pretty often ("Song of the Sun", "Nerds and Weirdos", and "Fireman"), but they've missed out on even more! "Bullies"; the title track, "Rattlesnakes for Breakfast"; "Sorry Mom and Dad"; and especially "Radio Song" are also tremendously fun. My son is almost three now, and he loves Mr. Nicky. We've bought cds for friends, and everyone loves it. At this price, you can't go wrong, so try it out. Your kids will love them, and I defy you not to start singing the songs yourselves.

| Paste Reviews The Choir
( 11/28/2005) |
| |
The new issue of Paste Magazine just released - Dec/Jan issue and reviewed the new Choir record. The song "Nobody Gets A Smooth Ride" was also included on Paste's music sampler that was inserted into 200,000 issues along with such artists as Fiona Apple, Nada Surf, Dolly Parton, Echo & The Bunnymen etc. Below is the review.
Paste Magazine Album Review
The Choir **** (4 Stars/Excellent)
O How The Mighty Have Fallen
Groundbreaking alt-rockers reclaim and update their classic sound.
The Choir's first LP since 2000's Flap Your Wings is also its most satisfying since 1990's Circle Slide, stripping away the brittle fuzz that characterized intervening works like 1994's Speckled Bird. "To Rescue Me" is a simple prayer of gratitude, relying on little more than guitarist Derri Daugherty's lilting tenor. The haunting atmosphere of "Mercy Will Prevail" underscores uneasy confidence in the notion of happy endings. "What a beautiful dream," signs Daugherty during "Terrible Mystery," a devastatingly personal examination of fail marriage. The rollicking "Fin Fun Time," however, finds friendship between Daugherty and lyricist/drummer Steve Hindalong aging gracefully.

| Staci Frenes Phantom Tollbooth Review
( 11/26/2005) |
| |
You are nothing short of amazing," sings Staci Frenes. The words are lifted skyward in praise to her Lord. The song inspired by a scene from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby paints beautiful words of adoration across a landscape of God's creation. The opening track "Nothing Short of Amazing" provides elegant lyrics set to some excellent drumming by Joseph Zanzwinger and the acoustic guitar work of Staci's husband Abe Frenes.
This former high school English teacher turned singer / songwriter has an eloquent way with lyrics. Although the words, "Nothing Short of Amazing" are directed towards God, Frenes' fans long ago acknowledged her amazing abilities.
The number two track on this her fifth CD, is "Safe Place to Land" an ethereal pop melody that highlight her resplendent vocals. The opening salvo from "Safe Place to Land" is an in your face lyric, "Well okay so this day hasn't gone quite like you planned." This is my personal favorite from the album and the missive is simple, with God we always get a chance to start over.
It is never fair to compare an artist's art sonically or lyrically to other singer/songwriters. Realizing however that some of you may not be familiar with Frenes you may want to think of her music as a stylistic blend representing the best elements of Shawn Colvin, Sarah McLachlan and Carolyn Arends.
Frenes' music is just as fun and bubbly as the artist. These are the type of songs to which you want to roll down your car windows and sing to at the top of your voice. In fact that subliminal message is contained in songs such as "Surprise Me."
Driving down an open stretch of road
I take my time enjoy the view
Every mile new miracles unfold
And I am in wonder of you
To think that you would gladly give me all this.
Musically "Imagine That" begins with similarly lazy riffs and vocals as "Sunny Came Home" (Colvin) and transcends into blues notes that lazily float to the surface like bubbles in a glass of soda. It is a song one can envisage blues / rock legend Robbie Robertson (The Band) playing. Co-writer George Cochinni and bassist Paul Buono provide the guitar work on this track.
There is a line in "St Mary's" that says, "My life has taken different hues" and the songs on the album certainly provide us with great pictures taken from the life of Frenes. The photos on her album couldn't be more appropriate. The front of the liner notes show her dressed casually, the photo on the inside of the CD case has her dressed stylishly, while the back of the case gives you that folkie tye dye look. Staci Frenes is all of those things and more.
In addition to Frenes three other producers worked on this album, Nate Sabin, Kenon Chen and Paul Buono. All three also appear as instrumentalists, Sabin (piano), Chen (bass) and Buono on keys, guitar and bass. Combined with the numerous other talented musicians who appear on the CD you get a very eclectic selection of songs that are beautifully arranged. This is one pop album that doesn't slog through more of the same as you wind your way through the disc. Each new tune that spins is fresh and charming.
